How to choose your first job when you're not sure what you like

By Pathvik Team22 Sep 20264 min read

Most students are told to follow their passion. The trouble is, you can't be passionate about work you have never seen. Here is a more practical way to decide.

Start with what you have actually enjoyed

Think about the last two or three years, not just your subjects. Which tasks made time pass quickly? Organising a college fest, explaining a concept to a friend, fixing a messy spreadsheet, convincing someone to buy something? Those moments say more about the work you'll enjoy than any personality test.

Look at the work, not the job title

Analyst, associate and executive mean very different things in different companies. Before you decide, find out what a normal day looks like: who you talk to, what you produce, and what you are measured on.

  • Read three real job descriptions for the role and underline the tasks, not the requirements.
  • Ask someone who has done the job for a year what surprised them.
  • Try a small version of the work: a case, a dashboard or a sales pitch.

Narrow down, don't lock in

Your first job is a starting point. Aim to shortlist two or three directions you have tested a little, then pick the one where you will learn fastest.

A simple test

If you can explain why you want a role, what you will do in it, and where it can lead in three to five years, you are making an informed choice. If you can't yet, that's fine. It just means you need to see more of the work first.
